Community Care Workers are locally trained workers whose key role is to provide families with education, care, and access to support during pregnancy and after birth. The Community Care Worker role has been established as part of a project Partnership between Mawarnkarra Health Service and Telethon Kids Institute. The Community Care Worker will work within the Clinical Services Team of Mawarnkarra Health Service. The Service objective is to provide holistic, primary health care services to the Aboriginal people of the West Pilbara region.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is part time 0.4 FTE for 12 months.
Hours of work 15 hours per week to be negotiated but ideally 3 days at 5 hours with 45 minutes (unpaid) for lunch to be determined in consultation with the line manager.
Other conditions of employment are identified in your contract for employment.
All Mawarnkarra employees are required to comply with all policies in force at the time of commencement of employment and those implemented from time to time.
As part of the orientation program, employees are required to sign declarations (including confidentiality) and agreement pursuant to policies of the Health Service.
The CCW role is to provide a bridge between existing health service providers and the local community to reduce the barriers that presently exist that prevent women from receiving the education, parenting support and care they need to have healthy babies and children. This is a highly valued position as CCWs will bring critical knowledge about their community and culture, expertise in communicating and working well with families and be responsive to the needs of the community. Working in partnership with local health providers this role will:
- Enhance cultural security in primary health care and promote two-way learning.
- Improve Aboriginal women’s ability to contribute positively to the health and well-being of the mother’s pregnancy and a nurturing and supportive family environment for the infant by supporting women to have a healthy pregnancy by not drinking alcohol and developing healthy relationships.
This role will be embedded with the Child and Maternal Health team and supports Aboriginal women to access to culturally appropriate services which promote the inclusion of Aboriginal women in appropriate antenatal care, parenting, and early childhood development.
SELECTION CRITERIA, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES
- Community care workers will have respect and good standing in their respective communities.

- Ability to build a strong rapport with individuals that promotes improved health and wellbeing outcomes.

- Community care workers will be able to draw on their experiences and cultural knowledge
- Be familiar with the WA Department of Health FASD Model of Care Policy and Implementation Plan
- Be familiar with the FASD Referral pathways
- Able to apply for a Working with Children Check and Federal Police Clearance
- Increase access to culturally appropriate services which promote the inclusion of Aboriginal women in appropriate antenatal care, parenting, early childhood development and other related programmes/services through outreach to women in the community.
- Assist parents to obtain antenatal and postnatal care and support to promote good physical and SEWB health. This may include support to stop smoking or using alcohol and other drugs during pregnancy and while breastfeeding or provide appropriate referrals
- Provide non-Aboriginal health providers with support to deliver care in a culturally competent way.
- Promote ways of working in partnership to ensure that women and their families are consulted and given informed choices about their care.
- Record all activities in log book/tablet.
- Attend staff meetings and training as required.
- Adhere to relevant OHS & Clinic policies and procedures.
- Take an active role in continual quality improvement in the delivery of client services.
Attend and participate in the Community Care Worker training and the professional development program and relevant external seminars and conferences, as approved.
OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION
Training as a Community Care Worker will be provided by Telethon Kids Institute staff on commencement of employment with continued professional development and mentorship throughout the course of employment.
Community Care Workers will be provided the opportunity to help shape role and determine training needs and provide evaluation feedback on the role.
Performance will be appraised on an on-going basis and formally at the first 3 months and annually thereafter.
Consent to undergo a Working with Children Check and a National Police Certificate. Employment is conditional pending the outcome of these checks.
