Clinical Services Team

Community Care Workers are locally trained workers whose key role is to provide families with education, care, and access to support during pregnancy and after birth. The Community Care Worker role has been established as part of a project Partnership between Mawarnkarra Health Service and Telethon Kids Institute. The Community Care Worker will work within the Clinical Services Team of Mawarnkarra Health Service. The Service objective is to provide holistic, primary health care services to the Aboriginal people of the West Pilbara region.

Senior Medical Officer (TBA)

This position is part time 0.4 FTE for 12 months.

Hours of work 15 hours per week to be negotiated but ideally 3 days at 5 hours with 45 minutes (unpaid) for lunch to be determined in consultation with the line manager.

Other conditions of employment are identified in your contract for employment.

All Mawarnkarra employees are required to comply with all policies in force at the time of commencement of employment and those implemented from time to time.

As part of the orientation program, employees are required to sign declarations (including confidentiality) and agreement pursuant to policies of the Health Service.

The CCW role is to provide a bridge between existing health service providers and the local community to reduce the barriers that presently exist that prevent men from receiving the education, parenting support and care they need to have healthy babies and children. This is a highly valued position as CCWs will bring critical knowledge about their community and culture, expertise in communicating and working well with families and be responsive to the needs of the community. Working in partnership with local health providers this role will:

  • Enhance cultural security in primary health care and promote two-way learning.
  • Improve Aboriginal men’s ability to contribute positively to the health and well-being of the mother’s pregnancy and a nurturing and supportive family environment for the infant by supporting men to have a healthy pregnancy by not drinking alcohol and developing healthy relationships.

This role will be embedded with the Child and Maternal Health team (and works alongside the Men’s Program) and supports Aboriginal men to access to culturally appropriate services which promote the inclusion of Aboriginal men in appropriate antenatal care, parenting, early childhood development services and support fathers to reintegrate into the family unit.

  • Increase access to culturally appropriate services which promote the inclusion of Aboriginal men in appropriate antenatal care, parenting, early childhood development and other related programmes/services through outreach to men in the community.
  • Improve Aboriginal men’s ability to contribute positively to the health and wellbeing of the mother’s pregnancy and a nurturing and supportive family environment for the infant by using flipcharts and factsheets and videos to deliver
    • Nutritional information sessions
    • alcohol and drug awareness sessions
    • tobacco cessation sessions
  • Assist parents to obtain antenatal and postnatal care and support to promote good physical and SEWB health. This may include support to stop smoking or using alcohol and other drugs during pregnancy and while breastfeeding or provide appropriate referrals
  • Strengthen the role of Aboriginal men in nurturing and being active in the parenting/rearing of children and in taking responsibility for their cultural obligations by conducting men’s yarning groups, bush camps or day excursions which provided participants with the opportunity to learn about and/or practice traditional Aboriginal culture.
  • Provide non-Aboriginal health providers with support to deliver care in a culturally competent way.
  • Promote ways of working in partnership to ensure that men and their families are consulted and given informed choices about their care.
  • Record all activities in log book/tablet.
  • Attend staff meetings and training as required.
  • Adhere to relevant OHS & Clinic policies and procedures.
  • Take an active role in continual quality improvement in the delivery of client services.
  • Work in collaboration with the Men’s Outreach Coordinator on all relevant issues.
  • Maintain the highest standards of professional conduct.
  • Participate in and contribute to the successful outcomes of the organisation.
  • Participate in research activities within the services as required.
  • Participate in maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Other duties as directed by management.

Attend and participate in the Community Care Worker training and the professional development program and relevant external seminars and conferences, as approved.

Training as a Community Care Worker will be provided by Telethon Kids Institute staff on commencement of employment with continued professional development and mentorship throughout the course of employment.

Community Care Workers will be provided the opportunity to help shape role and determine training needs and provide evaluation feedback on the role.

Performance will be appraised on an on-going basis and formally at the first 3 months and annually thereafter.

Consent to undergo a Working with Children Check and a National Police Certificate. Employment is conditional pending the outcome of these checks.

Our service is located within the City of Karratha 40 minutes from Karratha.
