Mawarnkarra aspires to be a strong, sustainable and recognised health service. We strive to work together to build healthier communities and positive change for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. We can achieve this by providing access to and delivering, quality health services to improve the physical, spiritual, cultural, social and emotional wellbeing of the families of Roebourne and surrounding towns and communities.

Originally, Mawarnkarra Health Service has set up three programs without funding from the Government – these are the Perth Outreach Program, the Men’s Program and the Women’s Program.

Perth Outreach Program

Perth Outreach program was set up to provide support for MHS clients / patients that are sent in Perth for medical reasons. The Outreach Officers role is quite extensive – the worker meets patients at Perth airport and ensures the patient arrives at their accommodation safely and settles in comfortably.  The worker ensures that they have basic necessities for the duration of their stay in Perth. The Outreach officer also liaises between the client and health professional, making sure that the client fully understands what the Doctor is trying to convey so that the best health outcomes are met for the patient.

Men and Women’s Program

The Men and Women’s program were set up to provide a place for the men and women to find something to do, learn, and to be supported. It was also set up as a healing place, away from work, financial or personal stresses and pressures.  It provides and encourages, empowerment, social and emotional support and care for the community.

Currently there are two officers in the Men’s program who provide counselling and education. Further, they also provide support in acquiring driver’s licenses and other pivotal goals for the men in the community. In the Women’s program, the women are taught craft skills or are encouraged to develop on their own skills. It allows for a place for the women to have a yarn and strives towards providing holistic support for the women in Roebourne.
