The Family Support Worker is part of the Clinical Services Team of Mawarnkarra Health Service. The Service objective is to provide holistic, primary health care services to the Aboriginal people of the West Pilbara region.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:45pm with 45 minutes (unpaid) for lunch daily. You are to be ready for work no later than 8:30am daily.

Other conditions of employment are identified in your contract for employment.

All Mawarnkarra employees are required to comply with all policies in force at the time of commencement of employment and those implemented from time to time.

As part of the orientation program, employees are required to sign declarations and agreement pursuant to policies of the Health Service.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The role of the Family Support Worker is to work in collaboration with the Midwife and Paediatrics Nurse to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal people through the provision of culturally sensitive care to women and babies. The Child and Maternal Health service relies on a community partnership between the family, WA Health, maternity and community based services and Mawarnkarra.

The Midwife and Paediatrics Nurse promotes access to midwifery services, provides midwifery services and pre and post natal care to children.

The objective is to reduce the rate of prematurity in Aboriginal babies, increase the access to antenatal care before 13 weeks, ensure the ongoing provision of the highest standards of care to clients, reduce peri natal mortality, reduce smoking in pregnancy, reduce low birth weight, increase the proportion of breastfed babies, and refer clients to the early childhood health service.

    · Confidence to support clients undertake surveys to support program objectives

DUTIES

1. Provide transport for clients:

Ø Pick up clients from home and bring them to Mawarnkarra to see the Midwife, Paediatrics Nurse or Doctors.

Ø Transport clients to appointments such as ultrasounds.

Ø Deliver appointment cards to clients.

Ø Collect goods for mothers and babies and deliver them to the client at home.

2. Provide support to clients:

Ø Attend to child care whilst the client is attending an appointment.

Ø Make home visits and offering support to clients in their home.

Ø Discuss issues and troubleshoot with clients on the telephone.

Ø Assess and refer clients to the midwife when appropriate.

3. Administrative duties:

Ø Ensure statistics and all data is accurate and up-to-date.

Ø Undertake survey and reporting, supported by Midwife and Business Development Manager

Ø Ensure all activities are documented into the Communicare system

Ø Ensure clients receive reminder phone calls regarding any appointments.

Ø Ensure that filing is done accurately and in a timely manner.

Ø Assist in managing and directing telephone enquiries efficiently and appropriately.

Ø Assist the midwife with administrative duties.

4. Quality improvement activities

Ø Take an active role in continual quality improvement in the delivery of client services.

5. Professional responsibilities:

Ø Work in collaboration with the Midwife and the Paediatrics Nurse on all relevant issues.

Ø Maintain the highest standards of professional conduct.

Ø Participate in and contribute to the successful outcomes of the organisation.

Ø Participate in research activities within the services as required.

Ø Participate in maintaining a safe working environment.

Ø Undertake other activities as requested by Midwife/Paediatric Nurse or Clinical Manager

     

    EDUCATION

    Attend and participate in the professional development programs and relevant external seminars and conferences, as approved.

    OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION

    Performance will be appraised on an on-going basis and formally at the first 3 months and annually thereafter.

    Consent to undergo a Working with Children Check and a National Police Certificate. Employment is conditional pending the outcome of these checks.

    Current Drivers Licence.

    Current CPR Certificate.

    COVID-19 Vaccinated.

    All employees are required to adhere to Smoking policy and be willing to undertake a random drug and alcohol screening.
